Synopsis:

Friends with Kids revolves around Jason (an advertising executive) and Julie (a charitable investment advisor), a pair of longtime best friends in their 30s who live in the same building in Manhattan. While not involved romantically, Jason and Julie are close friends with two childless married couples, the placid Alex and Leslie and the sex-obsessed Ben and Missy. During the next four years, after both couples have children, their marriages suffer. Following a chaotic birthday party for Jason at Alex and Leslie's place in Brooklyn, Jason and Julie discuss how it would be better to have children first and only then meet the person that you wanted to marry. After more discussion, they decide to have a child together, despite never even having a romantic relationship, and then to date other people. Although their friends predicted disaster, Jason and Julie adjust to their new relationship with baby Joe far better than their friends had.

However, their stable relationship begins to slip when Jason first begins dating Mary Jane, a Broadway dancer, and Julie then begins dating Kurt, a divorced construction contractor with children of his own. Mary Jane does not want children, and Kurt says that he doesn't want Julie to meet his children until they become serious. The two couples take Joe on a skiing vacation to Vermont with Alex and Leslie, Ben and Missy, and their kids. Upon arrival, the tension between Ben and Missy is obvious, and everything comes to a head 

during dinner when an intoxicated Ben begins attacking Jason and Julie's unusual relationship. Jason  responds with a passionate and articulate defense of his and Julie's situation and his complete trust in her, which prompts Ben to storm off and catches Julie by surprise.

After Vermont, Ben and Missy separate and divorce. Shortly thereafter, at Julie's birthday (about 18 months after Joe's birth), Jason is surprised to learn that she invited only him to her birthday dinner. Julie tells him that Kurt wants her to meet his children that weekend . . . but that she has realized that she is in love with Jason, who, along with Joe, constitutes her family. A stunned Jason tells Julie that he has never had romantic feelings for her and is with Mary Jane. Heartbroken, Julie moves out of her Manhattan apartment to Brooklyn, to put some space between herself and Jason. A few months thereafter, Jason and Mary Jane break up over their differing feelings about children, and both Julie and Jason return to  dating. Several months later, at a bar with Ben, Jason confides that he does have feelings for Julie, but that their messy split makes acting on such feelings impossible. Ben disagrees, noting the differences between his and Missy's sex-based relationship and Jason and Julie's long-lasting friendship.

Shortly before Julie's next birthday, while dropping a 2-1/2-year-old Joe off at Julie's house, Jason presents her with an early birthday present: a photo book of the three of them, consistent with Julie's prior statement that Jason and Joe were her family. Jason tells Julie that he's been in love with her for years, although he never realized it until now. Jason's sudden shift makes Julie emotional and uncomfortable, but eventually they end up in bed together for the first time (other than Joe's conception).

Synopsis:

Footnote (Hebrew, translit. He'arat Shulayim) is a 2011 Israeli drama film written and directed by Joseph Cedar, starring Shlomo Bar'aba and Lior Ashkenazi. The plot revolves around the troubled relationship between a father and son who teach at the Talmud department of the Hebrew University of  Jerusalem.

The film won the Best Screenplay Award at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. Footnote won nine prizes at the 2011 Ophir Awards, becoming Israel's entry for the 84th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. On January 18, 2012, the film was named as one of the nine shortlisted entries for the Oscars. On January 24, 2012, the film was nominated for an Academy Award in the category of Best Foreign Film, but lost to A Separation from Iran.

Eliezer Shkolnik (Shlomo Bar Aba) is a philologist who researches the different versions and phrasings of  the Jerusalem Talmud. He and his son Uriel (Lior Ashkenazi) are both professors at the Talmudic Research  department of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Uriel, a young charismatic academic, is extremely popular in his sessions with the department's students and the general public, and is also recognized by the establishment when he is elected member of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities. The father, on the other hand, is a stubborn old-school purist in his research methods. He is unpopular, unrecognized, and frustrated by his would-be lifetime research achievement having gone unfulfilled, as a rival scholar, Prof. Yehuda Grossman (Micah Lewensohn), published similar results one month ahead of Eliezer with only a footnote reference to the man he (Grossman) bested. Eliezer is also highly critical of the new methods of research used by his son and other modern researchers, as he considers them feather-light and superficial. His greatest ambition is to be recognized by being awarded the Israel Prize, but he is bitterly disappointed every year when he does not win it. His stubborn nature and lack of recognition have made him bitter and anti-social, and envious of his son's popularity.

During his routine afternoon walk from the National Library back to his Rehavia home, Eliezer receives a phone call from an adminstrative assistant of the Minister of Education. She tells Eliezer that he was elected this year's laureate of the Israel Prize, and congratulates him.

The following day Uriel is summoned to an urgent meeting with the Israel Prize committee. In the meeting Uriel is told that a grave error had occurred, and that in fact it was he, not his father, who was elected laureate of the Israel Prize. The committee wishes to discuss ways to correct the error, but Uriel objects, saying that the revelation would devastate his father. Uriel and the head of the committee, Eliezer's rival Professor Grossman, argue bitterly over the issue, until Uriel loses his temper and punches Grossman.

Regretting his outburst, Uriel relents, but asks that he break the news to his father personally. The committee grants him that. We here discover that not only has Uriel been submitting his father's name for the Israel Prize every year, but that Grossman has been vetoing it every time.

Uriel goes to the National Library to break the news to his father, but finds him raising a toast to winning the prize with colleagues, a toast which he reluctantly joins. Unable to break the news, he once again meets with Grossman, asking that the prize be given to Eliezer nonetheless. Grossman eventually relents, but with two conditions: one - that Uriel would write the committee's recommendation, and Grossman would only sign it; and two - that Uriel himself would never be a candidate for the Israel Prize. Though horrified by the second condition, Uriel agrees.

Uriel writes the recommendation text on his word processor, debating its phrasing with himself, picking and choosing every word carefully; at the same time Eliezer, finally recognized, is interviewed by the newspaper Haaretz, during which he denounces the scientific and academic validity of his son's research. When the interview is published, Uriel initially takes the punch and keeps his secret. Later, unable to endure the insult any longer, he whispers the secret to his mother, Yehudit, revealing the error.

During preparations for a television interview, Eliezer is dumbfounded by a word in the Israel Prize committee's recommendation. He flees the television studio and returns to his study. As a philologist, he examines the word, cross-checking its published uses, and realizes that the text must have actually been written by his son. In his memory he reconstructs his phone conversation with the Minister of Education, realizing she had addressed him by his last name only. He concludes that the minister thought she was  talking to his son, not to him, when she broke the news about the Israel Prize.

On the day of the prize ceremony, Eliezer and Yehudit arrive at the Jerusalem International Convention Center to prepare for the ceremony, with each knowing Eliezer's prize is based on an error but not discussing it; Eliezer is excited but also highly stressed, and perhaps devastated. The movie ends a moment before the laureates are called to the stage. It therefore remains unknown whether Eliezer actually received the prize, knowing it was based on an error, or eventually declined it.

Critical reception

The film received high critical acclaim. At Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a rating of 91%, based on 75 reviews and an average rating of 7.7/10. It also has a score of 82 on Metacritic based on 27 reviews.

Hannah Brown of The Jerusalem Post called the film "brilliant and audacious", and wrote: "Cedar uses dramatic cinematography, music and visual effects to signal that this is a film about an earth-shaking battle, at least in its protagonists’ hearts and minds. The acting is outstanding, notably by Bar-Abba and Ashkenazi." Cedar received the Cannes Film Festival's Best Screenplay Award.

Synopsis

The Raven is an American thriller film directed by James McTeigue and based on a screenplay by Ben Livingston and Hannah Shakespeare. It stars John Cusack, Alice Eve, and Luke Evans. It was released March 9, 2012 in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland and in the United States and Canada on April 27, 2012. Set in 1849, it is a fictionalized account of the last days of Edgar Allan Poe's life, in which the poet and author pursues a serial killer whose murders mirror those in Poe's stories.The title derives from Poe's poem "The Raven", in the similar manner of the unrelated 1935 and 1963 previous films.

When a mother and daughter are found brutally murdered in 19th century Baltimore, Detective Emmett Fields (Luke Evans) makes a startling discovery: the crime resembles a fictional murder described in gory detail in part of a collection of stories penned by struggling writer and social pariah Edgar Allan Poe  (John Cusack). But even as Poe is questioned by police, another grisly murder occurs, also in the manner of a popular Poe story. Realizing a serial killer is on the loose using Poe's writings as the backdrop for his bloody rampage, Fields enlists the author's help in unraveling the case. But when someone very dear to Poe could become the murderer's next victim, the stakes become dangerously high as the inventor of the modern detective story must draw on his own powers of deduction to solve the case before it's too late.

  

The film opens in 19th century Maryland – where several Baltimore policemen are chasing after the screams of a woman in an apartment. The police arrive at the apartment in time only to discover a woman sprawled on the floor with her throat sliced open and the corpse of her daughter stuffed in the chimney. Detective Emmett Fields is called to assist in the investigation and discovers that the crime resembles a fictional murder in the short story "The Murders in the Rue Morgue", which is part of a collection of stories penned by the writer Edgar Allan Poe.

Poe has become a social pariah and penniless drunkard whose stories have not been circulated for some time. He has fallen in love with the beautiful young Emily Hamilton and desires to marry her but faces opposition from her father Captain Hamilton, a military man who loathes Poe and goes to the length of  threatening physical violence. Poe is brought to see Fields for questioning and is horrified to learn someone is using his stories as the backdrop for a series of murders. Fields then proposes that Poe volunteer his services to help the police catch the killer and Poe agrees to the task.

   

Sometime later the two men are called to investigate the murder of literary critic Rufus Griswold, the man who became Poe's rival after a feud that was published in the Baltimore newspapers. Poe realizes the gruesome crime resembles a scene from "The Pit and the Pendulum" as Fields notices a red demon mask near the corpse. The two then deduce that the scene of the next crime will take place at Captain Hamilton's annual masquerade ball – a scene that will resemble the Masked Ball in "The Masque of the Red Death".

Fields assigns several members of the Baltimore Police to go undercover as guests at the Masked Ball. Sometime before midnight, at the height of the festivities, a man on horseback dressed in a skeleton costume appears. Fields shoots the man only to learn he was an actor hired for the entertainment and  receives an anonymous note. Poe then realizes Emily has been kidnapped, meaning the event was all a  distraction. It's revealed in the killer's note that he will continue to commit murders and leave clues to Emily's location. The killer then threatens to kill Emily if Poe does not start writing columns for the newspaper that describe the brutal combination of fact and fiction – forcing Poe to comply with the request in order to save Emily.

Sometime later, the local Medical School's anatomy class discovers a live raven and the corpse of a prostitute in theatrical clothing. Poe and Fields investigate and deduce the scene resembles "The Mystery of Marie Rogêt" except for one detail – the blood on the corpse's hands was not an element of Poe's story. The two soon learn the woman was an actress in costume as Lady Macbeth and rush to the theatre where the victim worked, demanding to see all the stage hands. All the stage hands are accounted for except for Maurice, a sailor on leave after his ship landed in Baltimore. Poe and Fields notice a mysterious figure running along the catwalks and pursue him but the figure escapes. Fields later makes an off-handed comment that the name of the ship Maurice arrived on is the Fortunato – which prompts Poe to realize the next murder will resemble "The Cask of Amontillado".

  

Poe and Fields search tunnels under the city with several policemen and discover an area with fresh brickwork, an area that might be where Emily is being held. The officers smash through the brick and discover what appears to be a woman with blonde hair in the costume Emily wore the night she was kidnapped. But the body is revealed to be that of the sailor Maurice, who was dressed to resemble Emily after he was killed and buried in the niche.

Two clues are found on Maurice: a pocket watch that was stopped at 12:27 and then stuffed into his mouth(with his mouth then sewn shut) and a tattoo on his back that had some flesh carved out of it. Poe and Fields deduce these clues will give the location of Emily, and Poe realizes a church in Baltimore called Holy Cross is where Emily must be. Everyone races to the church but they find it locked. While attempting to break in, one policeman whose name is PC Cantrell shoots at the killer but the latter jumps from the roof and slits PC Cantrell's throat. Poe and Fields hear the shooting and race to catch the killer, but shoots Fields and incapacitates him. Poe takes after the killer in a horse race but the killer escapes.

Poe walks back to the church where he meets up with Captain Hamilton, who finally apologizes for his treatment of Poe. Fields discovers a grave at the church that has Emily's name written on a wooden cross, but the grave is empty. Poe then decides to write a new column in which he tells the killer that he's tired of this game and is willing to exchange his life for Emily's if only the killer would release Emily. Poe dashes this new column off quickly, the editor loves it, and Ivan the typesetter is then tasked with getting the column to print. People in Baltimore, while still enjoying the excitement of the murders, decide to burn down Poe's house because they blame his stories for inspiring this bloodshed.

Poe then moves in with Fields because he no longer has lodgings. In the morning, the maid gives Poe both the newspaper and a letter from the killer. Poe deduces that the killer left the note on the doorstep the night before. Then, the paper boy came by and put the newspaper on top of the note after it stopped raining. Poe therefore deduces that the killer is someone who read his new column before it was published. Poe then assumes the killer is the newspaper editor.

 Fields, meanwhile, is having surgery with no anesthetic to remove a bullet in his shoulder. The doctor uses a magnet to find the bullet in his flesh...and Fields later uses this experience to realize that the ink the killer used in all his notes had ink that was magnetic. Since this is the type of ink used in newspaper printing, Fields will later independently realize that someone at the paper is the killer.

Poe reaches the newspaper office and finds the editor dead, with his hands separated from his arms and his body arranged at his desk as if he was writing a letter. In front of the editor is a note that reads, "Getting Warmer!" Ivan congratulates him on finding him, and then explains that he missed Poe's writing so much that he decided to make up a story of his own and then act it out in real life so that Poe would have to write about it.

  

Poe pulls out a gun but Ivan reminds him that Emily will die if he pulls the trigger. So Poe hands the gun over to Ivan and tells him that he can kill him if he will release Emily. Ivan gives Poe a vial of poison and tells him to drink it – so that he can keep talking to his "favorite writer" while the poison slowly kills him. Once Poe is too weak to go for help, Ivan tells Poe that he's moving to Paris because he wants to do the same thing to Jules Verne to force him to write more books. Poe overhears Ivan talking to someone outside about a cab to the train station and learns that Ivan will be traveling under the name "Reynolds".

Before Ivan leaves, he makes a reference to the Telltale Heart and Poe realizes that Emily is buried under the floor right where he's sitting. He breaks through the floor into the cellar and digs Emily out. The police get there and put Emily in an ambulance. Poe wanders off to a park bench to die after telling Emily that they will be married in heaven. While he's sitting there, a bearded man comes over and says he recognizes him as "Edgar Poe" the famous writer. That pleases Poe, but the poison has him so addled all he can say to the man is "tell Fields his name is Reynolds", which the man interprets as nonsense.

Later, at the hospital where Poe is pronounced dead, the doctor tells Fields that Poe's last words were unintelligible, that he had "said that Fields's last name was Reynolds". Ivan is seen exiting a train station in France, and as he enters a carriage Fields greets him with a pistol.

Production

Jeremy Renner was originally going to star in the film (playing the role later taken by Luke Evans), but he dropped out so that he could star in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.[6] Ewan McGregor was also in talks for a role, but he also dropped out. On August 28, 2010, it was confirmed that John Cusack would play Edgar Allan Poe in the film. Joaquin Phoenix was also approached to star at one point.

The filming began on November 9, 2010 in Belgrade and Budapest.[10] The first images from the set were revealed on November 15, 2010. A trailer for the film was released online October 7, 2011. This date is significant because it also marks the anniversary of Poe's death at age 40 in 1849. In 2011 Relativity acquired U.S. rights for only $4 million.

Reception

Critical reaction to The Raven has been mixed to negative. The film holds a rating of 21% on Rotten Tomatoes[13] and 46% on Metacritic.[14] James Berardinelli gave the film two and a half stars out of four, writing: "The Raven looks great and is well-paced, but a lack of a compelling resolution makes it an anemic effort."[15] Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote, "The story has its moments, and yet there is something about this tale ... that doesn't completely satisfy."

Synopsis:

21 Jump Street is a 2012 American action comedy film starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, written by Hill and Michael Bacall, and directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. It is based on the 1987 television series of the same name by Stephen J. Cannell and Patrick Hasburgh.

Morton Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Greg Jenko (Channing Tatum) are former classmates who meet again at police academy. Schmidt was a nerd while Jenko was a jock. They end up becoming friends at the academy as they help with each others' weaknesses with Schmidt helping Jenko study and Jenko motivating Schmidt through physical activity. They graduate together as partners, but are assigned to park patrol. They catch a break when they spot a group of drug dealers and arrest their leader Domingo (DeRay Davis). However, the department is forced to release him as Jenko forgot to read the Miranda rights. The two are reassigned to a revived specialty division on 21 Jump Street.

They are introduced to Captain Dickson (Ice Cube), who explains the division specializes in infiltrating high

schools and that they were chosen because of their youthful appearances. Schmidt and Jenko are assigned to  go back to their old high school to stop a new synthetic drug from spreading to other campuses by finding  the supplier. They go undercover as brothers, living at Schmidt's parents' house, and see that their high  school has changed. Jenko accidentally switches their identities and they get each others' classes. They 

 learn the lead dealer of the drug is the popular Eric (Dave Franco), but he is not the supplier.

They go to the dealing room where Eric forces them to take the drug there and not wait. They attempt to 

regurgitate it but are unsuccessful, and they undergo the phases of the drug while talking to their P.E. teacher, Mr. Walters (Rob Riggle), and also while running track and during band practice. The mistakes that happen at the track meet causes Eric to take a liking to Schmidt.

Schmidt manages to fit in with the popular kids and takes a romantic interest in Eric's friend Molly (Brie Larson), while Jenko becomes friends with the nerds in his AP Chemistry class while his teacher Ms. Griggs (Ellie Kemper) takes a sexual interest in him. Jenko discovers that his new friends secretly  tap into other people's cell phones to listen into their conversations. Schmidt decides to throw a party at his house to gain Eric's complete trust and Jenko takes the opportunity to tap into Eric's phone. Despite Captain Dickson ordering them not to serve alcohol and drugs to minors, they nevertheless buy alcohol and steal confiscated marijuana. When Eric arrives with Molly and his other friends, Jenko steals Eric's phone for his friends to tap into while Schmidt fights off a rival of Eric's.

Schmidt pretends to sell the drug for Eric but is actually giving it to Captain Dickson to be confiscated. While at Eric's house, Schmidt asks Molly out to prom while Jenko listens through Eric's phone. He also insults Jenko to Eric with Jenko listening. Schmidt and Jenko learn that Eric is making a deal soon. When Jenko spots Eric leaving school, he takes Schmidt to follow him. They see that Eric is dealing with Domingo and his gang and they follow them, but are forced to run away when Domingo spots them. Back at school,  Jenko accuses Schmidt of his earlier insults, possibly ruining the case, and getting in too deep, but  Schmidt brushes him off. Jenko and Schmidt get into a fight that results in them getting expelled and fired from Jump Street.

Later that night, both are confronted by Eric and his friends, who want to bring them on as security after hearing about what happened with Domingo. He tells them about a deal with Domingo happening during prom where they get to meet the supplier. At prom, they are surprised to see that the supplier is Mr. Walters.

When Domingo and his gang arrive, he recognizes Schmidt and Jenko as police officers, and tells two of his

men to kill them. However, the two men reveal themselves as DEA Agents Tom Hanson (Johnny Depp) and Doug Penhall (Peter DeLuise), who were a part of the Jump Street program when it began. Hanson casually talks to Schmidt and Jenko during the standoff which gives Domingo the opportunity to kill him and Penhall. A  gunfight ensues between Schmidt and Jenko, Mr. Walters, and Domingo and his crew. Mr. Walters and Eric escape in a limo with Molly as a hostage, with Domingo and his crew in pursuit of them in another limo. 

Schmidt and Jenko pursue all of them in another limo where Jenko creates a homemade chemical bomb from his knowledge in AP Chemistry to kill Domingo and his crew. They then confront Mr. Walters, who shoots at Schmidt. Jenko jumps in front of Schmidt, saving his life and getting shot in the arm and his chest, which was protected by a bullet-proof vest in the process. In response, Schmidt shoots Mr. Walters in the groin, severing his penis. The duo successfully arrest him and Eric and make amends with each other. Schmidt  makes amends with Molly and the two share a kiss. They are rehired into Jump Street where Dickson gives them a new assignment in a college setting, to Schmidt's excitement but to Jenko's dismay.

Production

In May 2008, Columbia Pictures confirmed that a film version of the series was under development. Jonah Hill rewrote an existing script by screenwriter Joe Gazzam and executive produced the film, as well as starred in the film.[15] Hill has said he wanted horror director Rob Zombie to direct the picture. In May 2009, Hill described the film adaptation as being a "R-rated, insane, Bad Boys-meets-John Hughes-type  movie".[16] On December 21, 2009, it was announced that Columbia Pictures were in talks with Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs directing duo, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, to direct the film.[17] The film follows 

 the same continuity as the TV series; Lord said, "So, all of those events of the original happened. And now here we are 20 years later, and we’re watching it happened to different people." However, the film features a highly comedic tone, departing radically from the more dramatic and earnest tone of the series.

 Filming:

 The film was shot in and around the city of New Orleans, Louisiana, although the filmmakers took elaborate

 steps to disguise the location as a generic city. They replaced distinctive street signs with signs using a Helvetica typeface, digitally removed billboards for local businesses, and avoided filming locations with iconic New Orleans imagery. The naked baby pictures of Hill's character used in the film were actual pictures of Hill as a child.

Music

A total of 21 songs were licensed for use in the film. Despite this, no soundtrack album was released featuring any of the music from the film including the score by Mark Mothersbaugh. A modernized cover of  the original television's theme song by Rye Rye and Esthero was released as a single in the iTunes Store.

 Release

The premiere of 21 Jump Street took place on March 12, 2012, at the Paramount Theatre in Austin, TX during SXSW. The film opened in a wide release in theaters on March 16, 2012.

Box office

The film topped the North American box office with $13.23 million on its opening day. During the weekend, the film grossed $35 million taking Dr. Seuss' The Lorax out of the number one spot that it held for its first two weeks. The film has grossed $137,181,723 in North America, and $52,225,464 in other countries, as of June 3, 2012, for a worldwide total of $189,407,187.

Critical reception

Reviews of the film have been very positive. Based on 194 reviews collected by Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently holds an 85% approval rating from critics, with an average score of 7.2/10. The consensus states: "A smart, affectionate satire of '80s nostalgia and teen movie tropes, 21 Jump Street offers rowdy mainstream comedy with a surprisingly satisfying bite."[24] Metacritic gave the film 69 out of 100 with generally favorable reviews from 41 critics.

Accolades

The film received five award nominations at the 2012 MTV Movie Award including Best Cast, Best On-Screen Transformation for Depp, Best Fight for a fight scene between Tatum, Hill, and a gang of school kids, Best Gut-Wrenching Performance for Hill and Riggle, and Best Comedic Performance for Hill. It won Best Music for the song Party Rock Anthem by the group LMFAO.

21 Jump Street will be released on DVD and Blu-ray in Canada and the United States on June 26, 2012

 and the United Kingdom on July 9, 2012.

Sequel

On March 17, 2012, Sony Pictures announced that it was pursuing a sequel to the film with 21 Jump Street: The Second Jump as the working title, signing a deal that would see Hill and Bacall return to write a script treatment that would be again developed by Bacall. Hill and Tatum are expected to return to star in the film. They will also be executive producers, alongside producer Neal H. Moritz. The film is set to be released on July 23 2013.
