For Greater Glory: The True Story of Cristiada (2012)

Synopsis:

The film opens with screen titles describing the anti-Catholic provisions of the 1917 Constitution of Mexico. Civil war erupts when newly elected Mexican president, Plutarco Elias Calles (Rubén Blades), begins a violent and relentless crackdown against the country's Catholic faithful. The film depicts the carnage by showing churches being set on fire, nuns subjected to extreme harassment, Catholic priests murdered and countless faithful peasants killed and then publicly hanged on telegraph poles.

The story shifts to Father Christopher (Peter O’Toole), a Catholic priest, who is ruthlessly murdered by the Federales (government forces). The killing is witnessed by a thirteen-year-old boy named José Luis Sanchez (Mauricio Kuri). Driven by anger and rage, José joins the rebels, or Cristeros ("soldiers for Christ"), fighting against Calles. Their battle cry is "¡Viva Cristo Rey!" (meaning "Long live Christ the King"). The rebel leader, retired general Enrique Gorostieta (Andy Garcia), an agnostic, takes an interest in young José and the boy soon becomes his protégé. Later while fighting against the Federales, José is captured in a firefight and is tortured to force him to renounce his belief in God. When he resolutely defends his faith, he is executed. The next year Gorostieta is killed in a battle at Jalisco.

Production

The film is based on The Cristero Rebellion, the 1976 chronicle of the war written by French historian Jean Meyer who resides in Mexico. The film took three years to complete and was shot in Mexico City, Durango, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosí, Tlaxcala and Puebla.

Release

The film had a robust opening in Mexico taking first place in gross admissions at the box office, and second in total receipts, behind Titanic 3D. As of May 11, 2012, it had grossed $2.2 million.

Reception

The film has received mixed-to-negative reviews from American critics, with many echoing Roger Ebert's complaint that "it is well-made, yes, but has such pro-Catholic tunnel vision I began to question its view of events." As of June 20, 2012 it holds a 35% rating on Metacritic based on 17 critics, and a 17% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 42 reviews. The latter site states: "It has laudable aspirations, but For Greater Glory ultimately fails to fulfill its goals due to an overstuffed script, thinly written characters, and an overly simplified dramatization of historical events."

Stephen Holden of The New York Times described the film as an "old-fashioned, Hollywood-style epic" and said it compared favorably to Christian mega-hits of the 1950s such as The Robe. He was most satisfied

 with Dean Wright referring to his direction as "impressively spacious". Composer James Horner also scored high marks for his score which Holden found "uplifting without being syrupy" and which set an "inspirational mood".

The fact that the Cristero War is little known – even in Mexico – is illustrated by film critic Steven D. Greydanus. He writes that For Greater Glory may help to rectify the situation. He observes that the film is "one of the most lavish and ambitious films ever produced in Mexico" and "a sweeping, handsome epic with strong performances, solid production values and magnificent locations across Mexico." However he found the screenplay overbearing and would have liked to have seen more character development.

Film critic Phil Boatwright wrote that the film is "a compelling, thoughtful homage to religious freedom" and it brings back memories of El Cid and A Man for All Seasons. 

Lauren Markoe examined the relevance of the film to the current political climate in the United States. The birth control mandate has pitted the Obama administration against the Catholic Church.

Synopsis:

The German U-Boat, U-234, from the Port of Kiel is trading cargo with the Japanese. USS Seaviper must locate and stop this dangerous exchange. The Captain of USS Seaviper must go ashore to conduct  reconnaissance on an island near Sumatra, but the ship is left in the hands of Mister Cutter, after the Executive Officer is injured in battle. A conflict between Cutter and the Chief of the Boat puts the submarine in jeopardy. Seaviper is trapped below the surface, with decreasing oxygen, and a Japanese destroyer hunting them from above. Damage to the boat also leave her survival in question. They must fight the Japanese destroyer and get the information about U-235 back to Pearl Harbor.

Synopsis

In 1944, after enduring racism throughout their recruitment and training in the Tuskegee training program, the 332d Fighter Group of young African American USAAF fighter pilots are finally sent into combat in Italy, although flying worn-out Curtiss P-40 Warhawk aircraft. Chafing at their ground attack missions against trains and enemy ground transport, the Tuskegee Airmen recognize that they may never fight the Luftwaffe in fighter-to-fighter combat. The tight-knit group of Joe "Lightning" Little (David Oyelowo), Martin "Easy" Julian (Nate Parker), Ray "Ray Gun" or "Junior" Gannon (Tristan Wilds), and Samuel "Joker" George (Elijah Kelley) under the guidance of Major Emanuel Stance (Cuba Gooding, Jr.) and Col. A.J. Bullard (Terrence Howard), face a white military bureaucracy still resistant to accepting black flyers as equals.

Strife develops between roommates and best friends, Easy and Lightning, each of whom are battling their own inner demons; Lightning is a hotheaded and reckless pilot who takes too many risks, while Easy is an alcoholic prone to self doubt. After returning to base from a mission, Lightning spies a pretty Italian girl named Sofia (Daniela Ruah), becomes instantly infatuated with her, and starts a relationship.

Meanwhile, Stance is able to secure a chance to "light up the board" when the Tuskegee Airmen are chosen to support the Allied landings at Anzio, Italy known as Operation Shingle. There, they battle Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighters led by a German ace pilot they nickname, "Pretty Boy" (Lars van Riesen), scoring their first aerial victories over the enemy, as well as destroying a German airfield. However, Ray Gun is injured during the battle and suffers impaired vision in one of his eyes. Ray Gun begs Easy to keep him on the flight roster who ultimately relents and allows him to keep flying.

Bullard is then approached by the USAAF Bomber Command, who are impressed with the Tuskegee Airmen's performance and ask him to use his fighters as Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bomber escorts due to unacceptably high casualties among bomber crews. Bullard accepts on the condition that his unit be supplied with the new North American P-51 Mustang[N 5]. The tails of the aircraft are painted bright red and become the unofficial name of the outfit. Bullard noted that the flaw of previous escort fighters is that they would recklessly pursue German fighters at the cost of protecting the bombers, so he orders his pilots to stay with the bombers at all costs. Their first escort mission is a success, with the 332nd downing multiple Luftwaffe aircraft without the loss of a single bomber. However, Ray Gun is shot down and captured while Deke crash lands and nearly dies. As a result of his injuries, Deke is discharged, and Ray Gun is assumed to be dead. Easy realizes it was his fault Ray Gun was allowed to fly, blames himself and spirals deeper into alcoholism. 

Lightning, worried about his friend, makes a deal with Easy; he will follow orders and fly less recklessly as long as Easy remains sober. Meanwhile, attitudes against the Tuskegee Airmen begin to change as they earn the bomber crews' respect, even being allowed into the "whites only" officer's club. Ray Gun is sent to a POW camp, where he is recruited by a group of POWs who are planning to escape. The escape attempt is successful, but some of the POWs are spotted by a guard so Ray Gun draws the Germans' attention while the other POWs escape. One of the POWs manages to reach the 332nd's base and informs them about Ray Gun's sacrifice, assuming him to be dead. Later, Lightning finally proposes to Sofia and she accepts.

The Tuskegee Airmen are then tasked with escorting the first American bombers to attack Berlin. However,

despite their P-51s having more than enough fuel for the trip, the 332nd is only asked to escort the bombers on the first leg of their journey due to propaganda reasons. But the fighter squadron meant to relieve the 332nd never arrives, and Easy makes the decision to stay with bombers all the way. They are then attacked by Pretty Boy, now leading a flight of revolutionary Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighters. Despite being outclassed by the jet fighters' superior speed and 30 mm cannon, the Tuskegee Airmen are able to shoot down some of the Me 262s. Pretty Boy manages to get on Easy's tail and is about to shoot him down, but at the last moment, Lightning attacks and kills Pretty Boy in a head-on attack. Victorious, but mortally wounded, he eventually crashes. Easy is then forced to inform Sofia about Lightning's death and consequently overcomes his alcoholism for good. At Lightning's funeral, Ray Gun miraculously returns, having survived his escape from German captivity.

Ultimately, the Tuskegee Airmen are awarded the Presidential Unit Citation in honor of their achievements.

Historical accuracy

Red Tails portrays largely fictional events based on the exploits of the Tuskegee airmen, although many viewers were left with the impression that the film was entirely historically accurate. Through a series of three webinars, entitled: "Tuskegee Airman Webinars - 'Was the Movie Accurate'?" sponsored by the Commemorative Air Force's Red Tail Squadron, surviving Tuskegee Airmen Colonel Charles McGee and Colonel Harold Brown provided perspectives related to the film's interpretation. Although discussions as to use of equipment and dates were mentioned, three claims made in the film were the most contentious: the number of losses suffered by bomber crews under escort, the encounters with Luftwaffe jet fighters and the overall record established by the Tuskegee Airmen. 

According to period records, it was believed that the Tuskegee Airmen did not lose a single bomber due to enemy fire, a statement made by a bomber pilot in the film. However, this claim has been proven inaccurate and an Air Force report from 2006, showed that at least 25 bombers were lost to enemy fire. As depicted in the climactic scene, the Luftwaffe Me 262 interception of a Tuskegee Airmen escort mission did not result in the first victory over the vaunted jet fighters, credited to another U.S. unit. The film also states in the epilogue that the Tuskegee Airmen established one of the best fighter records in the U.S. Air Force. Officially, the Tuskegee Airmen did not produce a single fighter pilot ace, although Lee Archer's record is still in dispute.

At the end of webinars, host Brad Lang, the CAF Red Tail Squadron Leader, described the interaction as important to reconciling the historical record with the Red Tails film's essentially dramatic retelling of the Tuskegee Airmen saga. Both colonels also agreed that the discussions were important to resolving the controversy over the film.

Reception

Red Tails received predominantly negative reviews from film critics, currently holding a 39% "rotten" rating on Rotten Tomatoes; the consensus states: "Despite a worthy fact-based story and obvious good intentions, Red Tails suffers from one-dimensional characters, corny dialogue, and heaps of cliches." On Metacritic, the film holds a 46/100 rating, indicating "mixed or average reviews". The main criticism was directed to the tone of the film; Stephen Holden in The New York Times review, noted, "In structure and tone, Red Tails proudly harks back to the 1940s and ’50s, when good guys were good, and bad guys bad." In rebuttal, co-writer Aaron McGruder commented on the film's tone: "Some people are going to like this tonal choice and some people are going to say, 'Oh it should've been heavier and it should've been more dramatic.' But there's a version of this that doesn't have to be Saving Private Ryan. We can be Star Wars, as crazy as it is." Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times review, stated, " Red Tails (is) entertaining. Audiences are likely to enjoy it. The scenes of aerial combat are skillfully done and exciting." In a similar vein, aviation historian Budd Davison, in agreement with fellow historian Barrett Tillman, although cognizant of the "Hollywood treatment", had a caution to aviation enthusiasts looking for a faithful reenactment of the Tuskegee legend, "... buy some popcorn, lean back and enjoy, this is Hollywood telling a story, not making a documentary. Save your guffaws until afterward with your friends."

In the face of media criticism of the portrayals of the Tuskegee Airmen in Red Tails, a number of activists had taken to social media to protest against what was thought to be a racially-tinged effort to denigrate the contribution of the wartime fighting unit. Beginning with statements to support the film made by surviving Tuskegee Airmen who had seen the film in previews, and spurred by the comments made by Lucas in a candid interview on The Daily Show where the producer openly discussed the difficulties of trying to get Red Tails made over the past 23 years, a Facebook campaign was started. In the Oakland, California premiere, two sold-out screenings were a testament to the success of the campaign. Effie Tesfahun, one of the organizers, explained, “When [Lucas] said Hollywood does not want to touch black films, it really hit me … I thought we should get together and all go and support [this film]. Regardless of what Hollywood thinks, we all want to see positive messages of black people in the movies ... We need to speak, and speak loud, and speak with our dollars, because that’s where people pay attention, when you start talking with your money," Tesfahun said. "We are sending a message that this is what we want.”

Red Tails received a nomination at the 2012 Teen Choice Awards for "Choice Action Movie".

Synopsis:

Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy, and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr Curt Connors, his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

The Amazing Spider-Man is an upcoming 2012 American superhero film directed by Marc Webb. It is the fourth Columbia Pictures film that portrays Spider-Man in film and is a reboot of the Sam Raimi film series with Andrew Garfield replacing Tobey Maguire as the title role of the superhero. The cast also includes Emma  Stone as Gwen Stacy and Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors. The film will portray Parker as his super powers are evolving in high school and will explore him trying to discover the truth behind his parents. With a theme of him discovering himself in the process. The film also brings to life new designs of the film franchise such as Parker inventing artificial webs like in the original comics instead of organic webs.

The film's development began simultaneously with Sony announcing the cancellation of Spider-Man 4. Opting for a reboot with the same production team rather than another sequel, the studio announced a July 2012 release date for what was now titled The Amazing Spider-Man. James Vanderbilt was hired to write the script while Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves helped fine-tune the script. Pre-production involved the casting of many actors and actresses trying out the role of Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy respectively until Garfield and Stone were the clear choice. Principal photography started in December 2010 in Los Angeles before moving to New York City with the help of Red Digital Cinema Camera Company's RED Epic camera. The film entered post-production in April 2011 with the film being shot in 3D with the help of 3ality Technica and with James Horner being involved with the film score.

Sony Entertainment has focused its marketing campaign with a promotional website with released images, three theatrical trailers, a prologue screening in certain cities, a video game tie-in being developed by Beenox and a viral marketing campaign among other products. The Amazing Spider-Man is scheduled to be  released first in June 28, 2012 in Europe and will then be released in the United States on July 3, 2012 in 3D and in IMAX 3D. A sequel of the film is being planned for release in 2014 with James Vanderbilt hired to again write the screenplay and with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci reported to rewrite it.

Director Marc Webb described the film as "a story about a kid who grows up looking for his father and finds himself." Both Webb and star Andrew Garfield described Peter Parker as an outsider by choice, as someone hard to get close to. As in the early comic books, the character "is a science whiz. If you look back to the early Stan Lee and Steve Ditko comics, he’s a nerd with big glasses," said Webb. He explained that "the idea of what a nerd is has changed in 40 or 50 years. Nerds are running the world. Andrew Garfield made a movie [called The Social Network] about it. ... What was important in those early comics was this notion that Peter Parker is an outsider and how we define that in a contemporary context." Garfield compared his Spider-Man as a metaphor for internet anonymity, saying, "You feel the power of it, the power of not being seen, the power of the mask. Peter becomes witty when he's got that protective layer. It's like he's on a message board. He's got the anonymity of the Internet within that suit, and he can say whatever the hell he likes, and he can get away with anything." Garfield also tried to explore Parker as an orphan, which he feels "are the strongest human beings on the planet." He said Parker is "a human hero [who] goes through all of the same struggles that we all have gone through, especially the skinny ones [who] want more power than they feel they have." He believes Parker he represents "a very inspiring, aspirational character that symbolizes goodness — and how difficult it is to be good — but how worth it it is."

Stone described her character as "a daddy's girl" who is very responsible and protective of her family and loves science. She said her character "offers Parker a world of stability, of a family unit not marred with parental loss and, beyond physical allure, the two also forge an intellectual connection over their shared love of science." Her character, she explained, "is stuck between [her father] the Captain and Peter Parker and Spider-Man, who have different ways about going about finding justice in their lives" which she felt was a fun thing to explore.

  

Webb felt the Lizard was the best villain for the film because, "He's the literal embodiment of the theme of the movie, which is we all have a missing piece. He has no arm. Peter has no parents, and he fills that void with Spider-Man." Producer Avi Avrad felt likewise, explaining, "[Y]ou look at Peter, he misses the parents, [and] Connors has one arm. ...[E]motionally, [it] is a very similar problem. It is a cautionary tale." Webb said the Lizard "is he is not the worst villain on the planet. He's not a mustache-twirling guy who wants to terrorize people. He believes he's doing the right thing." Actor Rhys Ifans described the character he is playing not as an evil-incarnate villain but as a flawed character, much as with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. "Curt Connors is by no means an evil villain," Ifans stated. "He's not like the Batman villains, like the Joker, who are the embodiment of evil. Curtis Connors is a great man who makes a bad decision. ... [T]hat's the whole magic of the Spider-Man idea. These people are the embodiment of our flaws and our desires that lead to tragedy." Ifans described Connors as a force for good throughout his life: "He's a geneticist who wants to help people, like him, who are limbless. In his eagerness to advance that science, he makes a mistake and that's an occurrence we've seen throughout time, sometimes to our benefit, sometimes to our detriment. ...He is a broken man who wants to fix himself." Ifans added, "I'm not portraying a villain in any sense. Connors does feel cheated by God, and he's looking for answers in science. God seems to intervene."

Production

Following director Sam Raimi and star Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man 3, Sony Pictures Entertainment announced a May 5, 2011, release date for the next film in the series. By this time, screenwriters James Vanderbilt, David Lindsay-Abaire, and Gary Ross had all written rejected versions of a script, and Alvin Sargent, who wrote the second and third films and was married to franchise producer Laura Ziskin, was working on yet another attempt. Raimi wanted John Malkovich to play the villain in this version. However, on January 11, 2010, Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios announced they were rebooting the series with a new cast and crew, with industry reports saying Raimi had told Columbia parent Sony Pictures he could not  meet the scheduled release date and retain creative integrity. Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and Ziskin, who were always involved with the franchise, continued on as producers.

Arad later explained, "We were working on what we called 'Spider-Man 4' and it was the same team [as with the first three films]. The problem was we didn't have a story that was strong enough and warranted ... another movie. And Sam Raimi ... realized we [didn't] have a good reason to make another one. And between [him] and [star] Tobey [Maguire] and obviously the studio, we all went into it not feeling good about the next story." Tolmach said one reason to restart the series was that the producers felt the core Spider-Man story was that of a boy becoming a man. 

Screenwriter Steve Kloves did a polish of Sargent's script, saying he had originally declined the opportunity to do so but "as a favor" to the filmmakers relented. "I also really wanted to write for Emma Stone, because I like to write for women and I particularly like Emma," he explained. "So ...I did basically character and dialogue, and that was enjoyable for me. So that was my hand in it. And I did a little plot work, but a lot of the plot was done." He also did "a little bit" of dialog for Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker / Spider-Man. In April 2012, writer-director Paul Feig said that Marc Webb, who succeeded Raimi as Amazing Spider-Man director, "invited me on set, and I did a little bit of writing for that movie, for one of the high school scenes".

Days after announcing Raimi's departure, the studio announced that Webb, whose previous film (500) Days of Summer was his directorial debut, would direct the reboot. Tolmach, now president of Columbia Pictures, and Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, said they looked for a director who could give sharp focus to Peter Parker's life. Webb said he "was a little sceptical at first — you feel the presence of those other movies. But then I was like, 'How could I walk away from this? What an opportunity!'" He stated that it was something he "found very appealing" and that "he couldn't let the opportunity go." Webb said in the press release announcing him that, "Sam Raimi's virtuoso rendering of Spider-Man is a humbling precedent to follow and build upon. The first three films are  beloved for good reason. But I think the Spider-Man mythology transcends not only generations but directors as well. I am signing on not to 'take over' from Sam. That would be impossible. Not to mention arrogant. I'm here because there's an opportunity for ideas, stories, and histories that will add a new dimension, canvas, and creative voice to Spider-Man." Webb felt Spider-Man is different from the Harry Potter franchise, which is based on a small number of novels, and "more like James Bond" because "there's so much material in Spider-Man that there are so many stories to tell and so many characters." He described the film as "not a remake" explaining that "we're not making Sam's movie again. It's a different universe and a different story with different characters."

Effects

The company 3ality Technica of Burbank, California was involved with shooting the equipment for the 3D for the film. The film is reported to be the first to be lensed in 3D using 3ality Digital's TS-5 wireless and handheld beamsplitter mirror rig. 3ality technology helped make it possible for the film not to be post-converted to 3D. About 3D Webb explained that he wanted to create a new 3D experience for Spider-Man: "Because we're shooting in 3D, I wanted to conceive of certain things very specifically for 3D. There's an experimental component to 3D that's fascinating and we're experimenting with generating that point of view – so you feel what Peter Parker feels, you feel what Spider-Man feels when he's jumping over buildings and over the streets. He felt that if there ever should be a 3D film it should be about Spider-Man." Webb elaborated that he shot the film in stereo so it was native 3D while nothing was ever converted. Webb felt that when you get that scope, the film will gradually expand. Webb stated that he and the crew "started making the movie around the time Avatar came out" which made every studio in the world want 3D. He admitted that he hadn't worked with it before and he didn't want it forced upon the movie because he has seen bad conversions and it scared him that it hasn't been used properly. He wanted to figure out how to give the audience an experience "that's worthy of a Spider-Man film". Webb also said while James Cameron liked to play 3D as depth, Webb wanted to push it a little bit further. He wanted it so that it would come out of you with films such as Creature from the Black Lagoon and House of Wax that he remembered when he was a kid as an inspiration for him to exploit that. About the creation of the Lizard, Webb explained that there was an entire staff of people dedicated to make the Lizard look lifelike. They started by thinking about a lizard's biology and how his muscles would work.

When shooting sequences of the Lizard, the crew actually shot an actual big human guy that was  referred to as Big John, who did a lot of the interactive stuff. Once the interaction of the Lizard was done, then the computer-generated lizard would replace him. Ifans would do the motion capture of the Lizard with Webb feeling that he should try to incorporate his performance into The Lizard and keep Ifan's performance in that creature. Webb described that as taking enormous amount of time and tricky. Webb also explained a lot of motion capture was used to the point that every moment was rendered from that input. It took a whole amount of work just to find the nuances, the eyebrow moves along with the lip curls. And when they were trying to create a character that speaks, they had to create a mouth armature and a biologically working palate that can actually create words. When computer generating the Lizard, Webb wanted to create emotion within the character that are essentially computer animated just like Pixar movies which he felt does it very well. In February 2012, the film was reported to be getting a digital touch up in Vancouver by Sony Pictures

Release

Sony first said on February 10, 2010, that the film would be released in 3D and IMAX 3D on July 3, 2012 in but due to high box office collections of the weekends, a few of the films original release was revealed to be changed to June in countries such as India and the Philippines. Kercy Daruwala of Sony Pictures in India felt very confident that the audiences of India will enjoy watching due to watching the film before the United States and also due to the famed Indian actor (Irrfan Khan) being connected to the film. The film will then be released in its original confirmed date in the United States in July 3. According to Sony the earliest release dates of when the film will come out is in June 28, 2012 in some countries of Europe.

Sequel

The studio plans to produce a sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man. It has hired screenwriter Vanderbilt to write the screenplay and Star Trek, Transformers and Fringe scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci to  re-write it. It is set for release on May 2, 2014. Webb stated that there will be a hint of the sequel's villain in the 2012 film. He additionally stated that there are hints to deeper storylines as well, but that he wishes to focus on finishing The Amazing Spider-Man before going fully to work on the sequel. Webb also stated that the origin story will unfold not just in this film but in the other films to come.

Wanderlust (2012)

Synopsis:

George (Paul Rudd) and Linda (Jennifer Aniston) are an urban married couple who purchase a micro-loft in New York after much hesitation. George is about to start a new job while Linda is trying to sell a documentary to HBO. On George's first day of work, he sees that the company has been put out of business, while HBO rejects Linda's documentary. With both out of work, they are forced to sell their apartment and decide to leave for Georgia to live with George's arrogant brother Rick (Ken Marino) and his wife Marisa (Michaela Watkins) after Rick offers George a job.

After many hours on the highway, Linda demands they stop to rest. The closest place to stop is a bed and breakfast hotel named Elysium. When they turn, they are surprised to see a man walking naked named Wayne Davidson (Joe Lo Truglio). They promptly try to turn back but flip the car over, so they are forced to stay at the hotel. While trying to sleep, they are distracted by noises in the living room. When they go to check, they learn that Elysium is a hippie commune. They meet the various residents of Elysium, including Seth (Justin Theroux), Eva (Malin Åkerman), and Elysium's owner Carvin (Alan Alda). George and Linda spend the night feeling more alive than before. In the morning, everyone helps flip George's car back so they can leave, but Seth urges them to consider staying.

 George and Linda arrive at Rick's house and find the atmosphere much less soothing. George eventually reaches breaking point with Rick and takes Linda back to Elysium, where they are welcomed back. George is excited about the simpler lifestyle while Linda is hesitant. After a few days however, Linda starts feeling enlightened by the lifestyle while George begins having second thoughts. George and Linda soon learn that  'free love' is strongly encouraged as Seth and Eva want to seduce Linda and George, respectively. Both  George and Linda rebuff the notion of free love.

 At the same time, Elysium is being targeted by property developers to build a casino on the property, but they are unable to until they have the deed to the land, which Carvin misplaced. When the property developers arrive with bulldozers, Linda scares them off by flashing them and the other residents join her. Linda is lauded as a hero by the commune. George then demands that they leave, saying that if they stay, they would have to give in to 'free love'. Linda wants to stay and has sex with Seth. George is pressured to have sex with Eva, but he drives her away with his bizarre behavior. The next morning, George reaches breaking point, stating that he dislikes the rules of Elysium and wants to leave. Linda wants to stay, so George goes back to Rick's house alone.

 Seth, in the meantime, finds the hidden deed to the land and sells it to one of the property developers, as he had been conspiring with them so he could relocate the commune. The developer burns the deed while a child from the commune watches behind a tree. Seth asks Linda to leave with him, but she is suspicious of his intentions. One day she goes to a diner to enjoy a steak and finds Carvin there doing the same thing. Joining him, he tells her that Elysium can only bring so much happiness and that people will need other things in life. Meanwhile, George eventually regrets leaving Linda and heads back to Elysium. When he arrives, he and Seth fight before being broken up by Linda who, along with the child, reveals Seth's scheme to sell Elysium. Seth is kicked out and George and Linda reconcile.

In the aftermath, the news show that visited Elysium does a story about the commune. George and Linda start a publishing company, with their first book being a political thriller novel written by Wayne. The novel is then fast-tracked into a film adaptation starring Ray Liotta. Carvin reclaims his rights to Elysium after he is reunited with all the original founders of Elysium, one of whom had another copy of the deed.

The film was released on February 24, 2012. During its first weekend ending February 26, Wanderlust opened at #8 behind Act of Valor and Tyler Perry's Good Deeds with $6.5 million from 2,002 locations. 

Given its poor debut, it was considered a box-office flop. After six weeks, it concluded its theatrical run with a respective domestic and foreign gross of $17,288,155 and $4,162,198.

Reception

The film opened with mixed to positive reviews. Based upon 126 reviews, it received a 60% approval rating 

on Rotten Tomatoes. Among 35 top critics, it obtained a 54% approval rating with the consensus saying, "It

 isn't always as funny as it should be, but Wanderlust benefits from an extremely talented cast and some of

 David Wain's most confident, assured work behind the camera." Audiences gave it an "unimpressive"
